  • ! 4 × AA batteries needed for transmitter — not included
The MemTrex Standard comes ready-to-run (RTR). The box contains everything you need to begin driving: the car itself, a 2S LiPo battery, a USB charger, and a 2.4GHz transmitter. After an initial charge, the car is ready to drive in approximately 30 minutes. Nothing needs assembly. No additional purchases are mandatory on day one. The Standard is a 1/16 scale off-road 4WD car with a brushed 390-class carbon brush motor, approximately 40km/h top speed, and LED headlights. The chassis uses a metal middle drive shaft and nylon differentials at the axles, with ball bearings throughout. This is a genuine hobby-grade drivetrain — components are replaceable, not sealed.

Who It's For

Three kinds of buyer

The Standard works best for first-time buyers and parents who want genuine hobby-grade without brushless complexity.

The MemTrex Standard is the right RC car for three kinds of buyer. The first is a parent aged 35–55 buying for a child aged 8–13 who has outgrown toy-grade cars — needing a car that feels genuinely capable without being so fast it causes anxiety. The second is the adult buying their first proper RC car — someone who wants to enter the hobby without committing £150 or more to a car they've never driven. The third is a teenager aged 14–16 using the Standard as a learning car before moving to a brushless platform — building throttle control on a forgiving, cheap-to-repair brushed car before upgrading.
1
Parent buying for a child aged 8–13
Wants genuine capability — not a toy — without 80km/h speed risk. The Standard's ~40km/h is exciting in a garden or park without requiring a field to operate safely.
2
First-time adult buyer
Entering the hobby without committing to £150+. The Standard at £69 provides a complete hobby-grade experience at the right entry price.
3
Teenager using it as a stepping stone
Learning throttle control, battery management, and basic RC mechanics on a forgiving brushed platform before upgrading to the Pro.

Hobby-Grade Explained

Why this isn't a toy

Not every RC car sold at £60–90 is genuinely hobby-grade. The distinction matters because hobby-grade means replaceable — which means the car can survive a childhood's worth of crashes and still be running years later.

Metal
Middle drive shaft
Handles torque transfer without the flex-and-snap failure pattern seen in all-plastic shafts.
Real
Mechanical differential
Allows wheels to rotate at different speeds through corners — the way a real car does.

Step up to the
MemTrex Pro

The Pro uses a brushless motor rather than the Standard's brushed 390-class motor. Brushless motors are faster, cooler-running, and more durable under sustained operation. The Pro reaches approximately 80km/h — double the Standard's top speed — with a five-press transmitter unlock for experienced drivers.

Brushless motor — faster, cooler, longer-lasting
~80km/h factory speed (unlockable)
2S/3S LiPo compatibility
Splashproof electronics
2-year chassis warranty
Most Standard owners upgrade after 12–18 months

Common Questions

Everything you need to know

Is the MemTrex Standard suitable for an 8-year-old?
Yes. The Standard is appropriate for children aged 7 and over, with the recommended minimum age of 8 for unsupervised use. At approximately 40km/h, the car is fast enough to be exciting but manageable for a child in an open space — a garden, park, or car park. The spare parts supply means crashes are a repair event, not a replacement event. A parent buying this for an 8-year-old is buying a car that will last to age 12 or 13 with normal use and occasional parts replacement.
Does the Standard require any assembly?
No. It is ready-to-run out of the box. The car arrives fully assembled. Charge the included battery, insert four AA batteries (not included) into the transmitter, and drive. Maintenance tasks — replacing a suspension arm, for example — require a basic screwdriver set.
How long does the battery last?
Battery runtime is approximately 20 minutes on a mixed throttle session. Full-throttle sessions will reduce runtime. For longer sessions, MemTrex recommends purchasing a spare battery, which enables under-60-second swaps and effectively doubles your session time.
What happens when it breaks?
The Standard is designed to be repaired, not replaced. The most common breakages — suspension arms and body panels — are both available from MemTrex's UK spare parts catalogue. Parts are held in Lancashire and dispatched within 48 hours. The car carries a two-year chassis warranty and six-month motor and electronics warranty — see the warranty page for full terms.
Is 40km/h fast enough to be interesting for a 10-year-old?
Yes. 40km/h on a 1/16 scale car looks and feels considerably faster than 40km/h in a full-size vehicle, because the car's visual scale makes the speed appear amplified. Most 10-year-olds find the Standard fully exciting. Most drivers hit the car's limits within 6–12 months of regular use, at which point the Pro is the natural next step.
Can I use the Standard on wet grass?
The Standard is not waterproof or splashproof. It is suitable for light splashing and damp grass, but prolonged water exposure is not recommended. For splashproof electronics, see the MemTrex Pro.
